Orlando City Commissioners and Mayor Buddy Dyer approved a 21% raise for themselves that's included in next year's budget. City commissioners who now earn $49,383 annually will see their salary jump to about $60,000, and Dyer, whose current salary is $160,892, will earn $195,500 next year.
Two commissioner, Tony Ortiz and Robert Stuart, voted against the raise.
Dyer defended the pay increase in an interview with the Orlando Sentinel: "We do market studies for the salaries of all our employees, and there hadn't been an adjustment for city commissioners or mine in a while, so we thought that was the most appropriate way to look at it," Dyer said.
The City Council also approved a new labor contract that will see a pay increase to police officers that will increase 2% a year for the next three years; the 2% raise will likely be extended to all of Orlando workers.
