The shooter responsible for killing 12 people at the Navy Yard in Washington yesterday, Aaron Alexis, was reportedly suffering from mental illness. Alexis often complained about hearing voices; in one instance he had called police complaining that a man he had gotten into an argument with at an airport “had sent three people to follow him and to keep him awake by talking to him and sending vibrations to his body.”
Alexis had been exhibiting signs of mental illness since his early 20's, even before his time as a member of the naval reserve. Alexis was described as a paranoid and delusional individual. It is not clear whether or not Alexis was treated for his illness, according to the New York Times.
