Kody Roach Charged with First-Degree Murder in Downtown Shooting

Police responded to reports of a man waving a gun around outside a bar in downtown Orlando early last Tuesday morning (08/19); the suspect was 23-year-old Kody Roach who was shot at 9 times by an Orlando police officer. One of the bullets hit and killed bystander Maria Godinez Castillo, 22, outside Vixen bar located off of South Orange Avenue.

Now, the Orlando Sentinel reports that Roach is being charged with first-degree murder. A newly released affidavit states that officers arrived at Vixen bar as dispatch relayed information reported by witnesses stated that Roach had opened fire. An officer fired their taser at Roach but was ineffective due to the bagginess of the suspect's clothes.

The affidavit goes on to state that Roach ignored commands to get on the ground:

"In order to prevent an armed individual from causing harm to any members of the public or to any of the surrounding officers, Ofc. Sanguino discharges his firearm nine times striking Roach at least five times."
